‘Wild Card in sight!
The Toronto Blue Jays, the team of ‘Korean Monster’ Ryu Hyun-jin (36) of Major League Baseball, are in the thick of the American League Wild Card race. The Blue Jays heated up the wild-card race with a hard-fought victory over the last-place Oakland Athletics.
Toronto won a hard-fought game against Oakland on Friday (May 5). They jumped out to an early lead and seemed to have the game won, but Oakland rallied to force extra innings. We scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning. However, they gave up single runs in the bottom of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to tie the game, which they eventually won in extra innings. We scored three runs in the top of the 10th to take the lead, then held Oakland to two runs in the bottom of the 10th to win the game.
The second and third hitters in the batting order paced the offense with multi-hit games. The No. 2 hitter, Kevan Biggio, went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored, including the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th to make it 5-3. On the mound, starter Jose Berrios was hit by two home runs, but bounced back with six innings of four-hit ball, two runs and seven strikeouts. Closer Jordan Romano entered the game in the top of the ninth and pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
With the win, Toronto improved to 76-62 and remained in third place in the American League East. Still 10.5 games behind the division-leading Baltimore Orioles, winning the division is virtually impossible. The gap to the second-place Tampa Bay Rays has been reduced to seven games. They also stayed within four games of the fourth-place Boston Red Sox.
The Rays may be out of the race for the American League East title, but they’re still in the hunt for a wild card. They are half a game behind the third-place Texas Rangers (76-61) for the American League wild card. They’ve also closed the gap to 1.5 games on the second-place Houston Astros (78-61).
Oakland, meanwhile, went 42-96, good for a .304 winning percentage, the worst in the majors.
