In this year’s Human Trafficking Report released by the US State Department on the 15th (local time), Korea was classified as a Level 2 country for human trafficking.
Last year, Korea’s status as a human trafficking state went down from level 1 to level 2 for the first time in 20 years, and it stayed at level 2 for the second year in a row.
The State Department said, “The ROK government’s efforts have generally increased,” but “the minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking are not fully met.”
“Despite reports that human trafficking for labor exploitation of migrant workers is widespread, the South Korean government has not made any reports, and authorities continue to confuse human trafficking with other crimes,” he said.
