The Little Mermaid, a Disney film that has been at the centre of various controversies, including “plagiarism,” “blackwashing,” and “excessive political correctness먹튀검증,” may not be able to break even.
On the 31st (local time), US film outlet Deadline reported that the Disney musical film “The Little Mermaid” has been performing poorly in South Korea, China, France, and Germany, raising doubts about its ability to break even.
According to the media outlet, “The Little Mermaid” is currently making more money in North American markets such as the U.S. and Canada than in overseas markets. This underperformance in North America is a rare occurrence for a Disney live-action film.
A film is likely to lose money if it earns less than $400 million (about $528.4 billion) in overseas markets. Currently, the film has earned only $789.61 million (about 100 billion won) in overseas markets.

Commenting on The Little Mermaid’s box office performance, a film insider said, “It’s not a huge disappointment. But it’s definitely disappointing considering Disney’s run of blockbusters.”
The controversy over the casting of The Little Mermaid is a major reason for the film’s underperformance in overseas markets. The film was at the centre of controversy even before its release because it featured a black actress with reggae hair, as opposed to the white-skinned, red-haired mermaid in the original.
After the film’s release, there was “star rating terrorism,” with people around the world giving the film polarising reviews. In particular, global film rating site IMDB said it had “detected anomalous rating activity” and was using an alternative calculation to ensure the reliability of its system.
It will be interesting to see if The Little Mermaid can overcome the controversy and break even at the box office.
